Cold, clear, and calm. Perfect for running. Picked up my packet on Friday night so race-morning was a breeze. Parked at the Civic Center and walked over to the school. Changed, checked my bag, and had about 30 mins to warm up. Lunges, jog, and light stretching. Ate a couple of gels I picked up at registration. Lined up at the back of the first third.
Last year I went out slow and accelerated. This year, I wanted to see how I was at mile 2. First mile is mostly downhill. Feeling really good at 2nd mile so just held tempo. Got water on the way into the river park (vs water as you exit then having to drink running uphill.)
Mile 4 was my slowest by about 5 seconds. Started counting pace in mile 5 and picking up visual markers to run to. Waggled my hips some, did a few butt kicks approaching mile 6. Turned up the hill. Made the first portion without losing too much. Grateful for the small downhill/level before the finish. The finish. Wow. The finish line was maybe 100 yards further up the hill this year. OMG! Crunch time. Just focussed on keeping form and finding the finish. Lots of folks on the side cheering up the last hill. Huge mob at the finish. Beat my 2010 time by about 40 seconds. If the finish had been in the 2010 location, would have really smacked last year's time.
At 44 years, I ran 51:51 with splits: 8:05, 8:21, 8:20, 8:26, 8:19, 8:18, 2:04.
Fantastic race.

PHOENIX (AP) — Josh Cox won the Arizona Rock 'n' Roll Marathon on Sunday, then kept on going to smash his American record for 50 kilometers by 3 minutes, missing the world mark by just 7 seconds.
Cox completed the 31.2 miles in 2 hours, 43 minutes, 45 seconds after finishing the marathon in 2:17:32 to beat Solomon Kandie of Kenya by 1:08.
"Seven seconds is hard to swallow," Cox said. "But I'm happy. The American record is nothing to hang your head about."
Thompson Magwana of South Africa set the world record in 1988.

From FootRx Asheville -
As much as I hate to do it, Mother Nature is forcing me to cancel the Blackjack for today. The roads are in no shape to drive safely. I'm sorry every one. We'll try to reschedule this one

EDIT - After seeing the times, I emailed the race director. She told me that there was a glitch and that several of the runners were timed for only 3 laps instead 5 laps. Still, they raised a good amount of money for a great cause.
