Great Interview with Alberto Salazar

Great interview with three-time NY winner Alberto Salazar. 'Berto says, "..keep your arms up!"

With two days to go before the New York City Marathon, Sports Illustrated caught up with Alberto Salazar, winner of three straight NYC Marathons from 1980-82, and coach of Dathan Ritzenhein. Ritzenhein had a breakout year, setting the American 5k record -- (since broken) -- in August, and is now one of the top competitors in this year's marathon.

SI: Dathan mentioned that one of the big changes when he came to you was that running became a full- time, 9-5 job, with plyometrics, biomechanic work, cryotherapy, video analysis, etc.

Alberto Salazar: I think in running, to be honest, that even though athletes are very dedicated and are willing to train and do whatever they need to do to prepare, more often than not they're not in a very professional environment where you've got a high performance director and a coach that are really monitoring your daily activities. In what other professional sport does an athlete decide, 'Well, maybe I'll just do these or that exercise today, or maybe I'll do therapy today or maybe I won't. Maybe I'll look at game film today or maybe I won't.' What we tried to set up in the Oregon Project is a very professional atmosphere where we're not leaving any stone unturned and treating these athletes -- they may not be making $5 million a year like some baseball player or basketball player -- but there's no reason they shouldn't be in as professional an environment as them, and that means that you're guiding them and giving them the best that sports science, medicine and technology can give.

ING NYC Marathon is this Sunday

I'm getting psyched to watch the NYC Marathon on Sunday, November 7, 2010.

I'm pulling for Meb to repeat and I'm curious to see how Geb will fare.

Wish I was going to be there to watch. Wish I was going to be there to run.

Sarah Hope Wins Athens Half Marathon

Former Roberson star Sarah Hope won a half-marathon on Oct. 24.

ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia freshman Sarah Hope edged a pair of former Lady Bulldogs to win the first-ever Athens Half-Marathon on Sunday morning.

Hope, a native of Asheville, N.C., finished the 13.1-mile course in 1:27.41 ahead of former All-American and three-time Southeastern Conference champion Sarah Madebach (2nd – 1:27.49) and former standout Jill Skinner (3rd - 1:28.26).

With a field that featured 1,017 female competitors and a course that snaked up and down the many hills that Athens has to offer, Bulldog distance coach Jeff Pigg was pleased with the efforts of one of his freshman runners.

'She has been working hard all year and has already shown many signs of improvement,' said Pigg. 'We kind of recognized that she might not break into our top 10 as we prepared for the SEC Championships, which shows you how deep this team is. She mentioned that her mom was going to be in town for the race and asked if she could run the half-marathon and I told her for sure. I am really proud of the way she took advantage of his opportunity.'

What are they feeding those kids over at TC?

Race Report - Burnsville Scamper 5K

Saturday, October 16,2010
A beautiful morning in Burnsville. Mid 40's, sunny, and very little wind (very un-Scamper-like). About 200 runners readied for the 9:00 am start.

I hadn't pre-registered as I wasn't sure if my ITBS would allow me to race, but the week leading up to the race had been pain free. My longest run had only been 2.6 miles, just two days before, so I knew I could just relax, not worry about a PR, and just run the race. My goals were to run easy for the first mile and slowly pick up my pace for a strong finish. I ran 9:08, 8:58, and 10.11 splits. The last is 1.1 miles and includes the monster uphill finish.

Overall I was very happy. I ran totally pain free (concentrating on keeping my abs engaged and a good forward lean) and got to see some friends. I feel like my rehab work has really paid off and I'm looking forward to a good running this winter.
