ASHEVILLE — Bunny Cabaniss was heartsick to learn this would be the last year of the Biltmore/Kiwanis 5K/15K Classic.
But Cabaniss, president-elect of Kiwanis Club of Asheville and race director for the classic, said 13 years of having the race on the grounds of the estate was a good run.
“My stomach dropped when they told us,” Cabaniss said of the Biltmore's decision not to host the 3.1- and 9.3-mile road races on the private estate beyond 2010. “But we're so grateful for the 13 years we've had…, and we know that some things must come to an end.”

"Bryant will get a chance to put everything he's made for out on the trails Saturday when he tackles the 13th annual event, which includes the 40-mile challenge and the 26.2-mile Black Mountain Marathon.
Both races start on Cherry Street in downtown Black Mountain and head out on snow and ice-covered trails. The marathon turns around once it hits the Blue Ridge Parkway, while the challenge runners continue climbing more than 4,300 feet up to the summit of Mount Mitchell — the highest point in the Eastern United States at 6,684 feet — before descending for a finish at Lake Tomahawk Park.

Asheville High won the NCHSAA 1-A/2-A/3-A boys indoor track meet today in Chapel Hill. The Cougars (62 points) got a most valuable athlete performance from North Carolina recruit Isaac Presson on his future college track to hold off runner-up Marvin Ridge (53) and the rest of the field. Presson won the 1,000 (2:35.61) and 1,600 meters (4:17.96), while placing second in the 3,200 (9:24.08). His time in the 1,600 was a personal record and Asheville competed without distance star John Harwell who had do interviews for a possible academic scholarship at N.C. State. Asheville had finished second at the indoor meet the past three years. Complete results are available here.

1. Know your limits.
2. Listen to your body.
3. Consider shortening your stride.
* My own contribution - Don't run on the ice. I took a nasty fall on January 2nd running over what I thought was just new snow, but the snow was covering an ice slick. I went down hard, tore the brand new tights Lisa got me for Christmas, and my left knee throbbed for a week.
