New Racing Flats

Having run a number of 5K and 10K races over the last few years, I decided to buy a dedicated pair of racing flats. Thanks to their Mismatch program, I'm happily married to Brooks shoes. I'd seen the new T7 and the Green Silence; both looked and felt like awesome shoes. As the flats were going to be a luxury item for me, I asked the staff at FootRx if they might have any of last year's T6 Racers left over. Much to my delight, they did! I got a great price on a fantastic pair of shoes. The T6's weigh 6.1 oz. I wore them in a local 5K last weekend and PR'd by :32 seconds.

I don't race every weekend these new kicks will probably last me a while.

My Brooks fleet. Defyance 3 on the right.

Race Report -2011 Burnsville Fit Families 5K

Perfect morning for racing in Burnsville. Overcast, 60 degrees, and just a hint of breeze. About 80 runners and walkers turned out for the race; quite a few graduates of the Couch Potato to 5K training group among the participants.

I did a race-day registration, then started out to jog the course. Not long after, I heard another runner come up along side and was pleased to see Aaron Saft, co-owner of Foot Rx, Asheville. Aaron had never run in Burnsville so we jogged the whole course and had a really nice chat along the way.

I'll take a moment here and share my personal experience with Foot Rx. They are a fantastic runner's shop. Very customer friendly. Very knowledgeable. Great selection. I actually bought a pair of Brooks T6 racing flats on Weds. Aaron remembered me this morning and asked if I was going to be wearing them. Indeed! If you need shoes, if you want to consult about what shoes will work best for you, if you need gear or supplies, visit Foot Rx

On to the race. As the course begins with a long downhill, it's very easy (and tempting) to go out too fast. Those taking that approach will be punished hard in mile 2. I've been that guy before, the one crossed-eyed and wheezing climbing back up West Main. Using my home-field advantage, I started out very even (having written my .5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 mile goal splits in sharpie on my left arm. Yes, I'm a nerd) Despite running very consciously, I ran through mile one about 15 seconds ahead of schedule. I focussed and kept a very stead pace up the big hill and went through mile 2 exactly on my goal time. Kicked it up a notch climbing the hill on Green Mountain drive. Held that pace around the old school loop into the last downhill/uphill exchange.

My "perfect day" goal was to break 24:00 (my PR was 24:32). Having played with times and splits on paper, considering my current fitness, most of my predicted times were coming out at 24:10-ish, so I knew it would have to be a great day to get close. I really hammered the last half mile and coming up the hill, through mile 3 I knew it would be close. I sprinted the last 100 meters uphill and crossed in 24:00 even.

I finished 9th overall and 2nd in my age group, behind Spruce Pine's Matt Hollified another super nice guy and great runner. Matt organizes several races over in Mitchell county. Check out the schedule at Mitchell Races

So, I didn't break 24:00 but I came as close as I could and set a new PR by :32 seconds. I stuck to my plan and ran the race I wanted to run and spent some great time hanging out with other runners, which is what it's all about.

BTW - Aaron set a new course record, running th 3.1 miles in 16:18. Oh, and he's running a trail marathon next weekend in Chattanooga. Wow.

2011 Morris Broadband 1/2 Marathon Race Report

DuPont State Forest
My behind, such as it is, has been kicked. Calves are shredded. Left hamstring twitching like a junkie with a $100 bill. We live and learn is the phrase that comes to mind.

Got to the site at 8:00 am. Had plenty of time to take a nice 20 minute warm up jog, do my loosening routine. At 8:30, I made a mistake. I'd eaten half a bagel with molasses and half a banana around 7:15 am. I had brought along some Cliff "Shot Bloks Energy Chews" and I ate 3 at 8:30. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. I violated a cardinal rule of racing "Don't do anything new on race day"

We lined up, the race director encouraging people to gather with other runners with similar projected times, the national anthem was played and the gun went off. The first 1.5 miles are downhill. Since the race is an out-n-back, the run finishes the last 1.5 miles uphill. Steep, LONG, hill between mile 3 and 4, then you run onto a landing strip. Down and around both ends, then back onto the gravel road for hills, hills, hills, and just in case you missed one, more hills.

My stomach felt like I'd swallowed two alley cats. If I could have lifted my leg, I would have kicked myself. Following Danny Dryer's advice (I saw Danny at the race) I'd set a timer on my watch that went off every 10 minutes and I'd take a sip from my water bottle. Felt like I was staying well hydrated. Around 1:10, I ate a GU gel, which really seemed to help. In mile 8 I chose to walk part of an uphill. After another 5-6 minutes of running, my stomach would cramp up. I fell into this pattern for the next couple of miles. I did push the last mile, both calves cramping as I crossed the finish line.

The course was well marked with lots of volunteers to keep the runners on track. Aid stations were set every two miles, so runners passed three out and three coming back. The staff were very vocal and gave lots of encouragment. Overall, the race was very well organized.

Today was also the warmest day of the year so far. Nearly all of my training has been run in th 50s or much colder; maybe one or two days in the low 60s. Today was well into the 70s during the run and pretty humid. Like I said, I took a small drink every 10 minutes but still had to deal with cramping on the steep uphill stretches.

Lessons-Shouldn't have eaten the Shot Bloks. Probably started too fast. Didn't know the course was so steep. I'd called the race director to confirm my registration and he'd described the course as "rolling hills". Um...no.

I'll be better prepared for my next race and will benefit from learning the hard way.
